New Boiler Reviews

Big considerations when purchasing a new boiler are the ‘output’, the physical size and the location. They come in all different shapes and sizes and they also deliver heat and hot water differently – which can have an impact. Combi boilers are great for small homes or flats; they are compact and heat water directly from the mains delivering heat and hot water almost immediately. However, they aren’t always great for larger hot water requirements.

For larger properties, system or sealed system boilers are often used. These are bigger systems that use an expansion tank and storage cylinder which are installed either in the loft or in a big airing cupboard. System boilers are more suitable for homes that use a lot of hot water.

You may also need to consider whether to have a wall or floor mounted unit, depending on which position is most convenient, and on top of that there may be various weight and dimension factors to consider.

If you haven’t done so already, it may be worth grabbing a tape measure and doing a bit of reconnaissance work to establish what kind of heating system you currently have, where it is positioned and how big it is.

Some models use a pre-plumbing jig and this can actually make the installation process simpler or allow the system to be easily flushed protecting the boiler from any sediment. For on-going maintenance the standardised layout can also make servicing easier too. So, look out for models which have this feature because it could save time and money.

Most manufacturers tend to offer ranges of boiler ‘output’ to cater for most domestic heat and hot water needs. Naturally, the higher the output the more heat and hot water it can produce. If you are unsure what rating you require, there are plenty of good output calculators and SEDBUK (Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK) has one of their own. However, to give you an idea an average combination boiler with a 29kW output can deliver 12.5 litres/minute of hot water at 35°C.

The SEDBUK efficiency bands range from G which is below 70% efficiency to A which is above 90%. The higher the efficiency the less energy your boiler wastes, it’s as simple as that. The above information should give you an idea of what you should be looking out for when buying a new boiler.

Always consult a qualified Gas Safe heating engineer before buying.

Prices shown represent the lowest (approximate) base unit price for each boiler obtained from various online retail sources inclusive of VAT but excluding installation. British Gas boilers are normally quoted individually inclusive of installation so they are marked £POA (Price On Application).
